Know Your Breasts. Know What's Normal.
Breast awareness starts with knowing how your breasts normally look and feel. This can help you recognize changes that may need medical attention.
Look
In front of a mirror, observe your breasts with your arms down and then raised. Look for changes in size, shape, or appearance.
Feel
Gently feel your breasts and underarm areas for any new lump, thickening, or unusual change.
Notice
Pay attention to your nipples and the surrounding skin. Become familiar with what is normal for you.
Look. Feel. Notice.
What Changes Should You Look For?
- ✓A new lump or thickening in the breast or underarm
- ✓A change in breast size or shape
- ✓Skin dimpling, redness, or unusual texture
- ✓A newly inverted nipple
- ✓Unusual nipple discharge, especially if bloody
- ✓Persistent or unexplained breast or underarm pain
Breast awareness does not replace recommended breast screening. If you notice a change, seek medical advice even if you recently had a normal screening.
